If you asked people who live in Jakarta, what are they doing for the weekend? Mostly the answer will be going to nearby town if the weekend plan including a getaway. The nearby town crowded by people from the capital ranging from Bogor (Puncak), Bandung, Sukabumi, Anyer and so on. Not so many people will mention Pelabuhan Ratu. The reason being the distance and how the local government is not publishing so much about the area.
In term of distance, Pelabuhan Ratu is only 90km from Jakarta. However the traffic which is crowded in the weekend (because to go to Pelabuhan Ratu, we have to compete with all the people want to getaway to Bogor) make the trip took 5 hours by car.
You need to have a car in Pelabuhan Ratu unless you want only to stay in your hotel and enjoy the view and hotel facility only. There's no adequate transportation other than the motorbike taxi (called ojek) and small minibus (called angkot) which for someone as big as my husband is not really comfortable to go with. My husband and I owned a place on top of the hill, where we can have beach view in one side and rice padi field view on the other side. If you somehow managed to stop by in Pelabuhan Ratu during your visit to Indonesia, you are welcome to contact me and I'll give you a guide (or even a stay in our place if any room are available).
Attraction in Pelabuhan Ratu consist of mainly beach, you can surf because the wave is good to do so, or renting a boat to go for a sailing/fishing trip. There's also some white beach to walk around, fishing area to have some quite moment, mountain walk/hiking around the small road that goes up and down, bat cave which is scarry but interesting, and some (very) small version of (local stuff) shopping (compared to the one you can do in the so many malls of Jakarta).
