We had stopped for the night in Geraldine, just south of Christchurch. From there we headed towards Hanmer Springs, some natural hot springs, which have been developed to form a sort of public lido. We spent a couple of hours there enjoying the sunshine and an ice cream before continuing on towards Kaikoura.
On the road just before Kaikoura, we came accross a campsite right on the jagged coastline, so we camped there for the night. In the morning we went into town where we had a stroll around, but decided not to go on a whale or dolphin trip as we wanted to save our money for a diving trip later on. We had coffee and the best carrot cake ever, while we planned our trip through the North Island.
We set off towards Nelson and shorltly after leaving we encountered a huge colony of seals dozing on the rocks by the road so we stopped and wached for a while. A little further on we stopped at Nin's Bin, which is a converted caravan selling cooked crayfish at the side of the road. Yummy! We then stopped yet again for mussels at The Store, a beautiful restaurant with gardens overlooking the sea. Our final stop before reaching Nelson was at the Montana Winery, where we had a free tasting and bought a bottle for our hosts in Nelson.
