Arum and Steve at Halong Bay

Today we left for the 2 day 1 night boat trip of Halong Bay which we booked the day before.  A van picked us up from our hotel around 7:30am and we left to meet the bus which would take us to Halong Bay.  The trip took about 3 hours and we stopped along the way at some touristy shop.  The ride was very uncomfortable for Steve because they packed us into this minibus and there was no space at all for Steve's legs so he was squished the whole ride.

We arrived at Halong Bay around 11:30am.  We had to wait around the port of the bay for a long time while they were getting our tickets.  Finally we got on the boat.  We then waited around in the boat at port for clearance to leave.

While waiting they served us lunch on the boat.  There was about 32 people on this boat tour, even though we were told at booking that there would be only 14 or 16 people.  So we were all squished into the tables and they served us dishes in the middle of the table that we all shared.  Steve really dislikes this method of eating because he has to eat fast to get enough food to fill him.  Lunch was ok, some western items such as french fries and also some other various dishes.

We eventually left port and started sailing through beautiful Halong Bay.  It was breathtaking as we sailed through these limestone islands, there is suppose to be over 3000 islands in Halong Bay.  We sailed for about 20 minutes to a cave on one of the islands.  The cave was pretty big and set up for tourists with lights inside the cave and stairs.

Cave
But still the cave was interesting with lots of great rock formations to look at.  We were coralled through the cave and then back on the boat.  We ended up waiting on the boat at the cave for about an hour because the tour guides were terrible.  They thought that someone was missing and waited around forever for them, only to find out that it was just a miscount!

Finally around 4pm we sailed to Cat Ba island, the only inhabited island in Halong Bay.  We dropped about half of the boat off here because they would be sleeping at a hotel on Cat Ba whereas the rest of us would be sleeping on the boat.  Now there was only 16 of us on the boat, a great change and more space for everyone.

Next we sailed to another part of Halong Bay where they dropped anchor and let us swim around for an hour or so.  The water was very warm and smooth and Steve enjoyed jumping off of the top deck of the boat into the water, but I was too scared.  After swimming we had dinner on the boat, again sharing the food in the middle, and it was very identical to the dishes at lunch.  It was suppose to be a seafood meal, but really there was just 1 fish for the whole table.

After dinner we sat on top of the deck and looked at the stars, it was very beautiful and relaxing.  We were so tired, my eyes were droopy.  So we retired to bed on the boat in our little room.  It was hot, they had a fan going with a generator but in the middle of the night they turned the generator off so then it was really hot and I was awake often.
