"It is beautiful, of course it's beautiful--the Harbor; but that isn't all of it, it's only half of it; Sydney's the other half, and it takes both of them together to ring the supremacy-bell. God made the Harbor, and that's all right; but Satan made Sydney."
Mark Twain, 1897
Beach update: Visited Austinmer (south of Sydney). There is a great highway that leads to it along the coast – at some points it appears to be directly over the water. On the way, we saw a group of aussies sitting out on their lawn with a cardboard sign saying “Stop Here for Free Beer.
” It was pretty funny – one “bloke” had made himself a sort of toboggan out of ice that he rode down a grass hill towards the beach.
Christmas parties are in full swing and there is plenty of debauchery on the streets at night. Last weekend I went out to the outdoor Opera bar for some champers, then took a water taxi around the harbour with a friend and some wine and arrived back at the Opera House just as some fireworks were starting. When we were in the water taxi, the driver went pass this development of extremely expensive glass lofts – one of which owned by Russel Crowe – they were beautiful, sticking out at the end of a wharf and all the lights were on so it just glowed in the harbour.
Kings Cross, where I have been out a couple of times, is really a scene at night. There are no shortage of bars here, although many people drink as if the city is about to run dry.
I really enjoyed the areas of Potts Point, Woolloomooloo and Paddington. On Saturday I went out for a drink at the Yacht Club on Rushcutters Bay which was gorgeous.
On way to Austinmer
On Saturday I met up with an old friend from elementary school who was in Sydney for the weekend. We went to a popular club on the water and then spent just as long trying to get a taxi home. It is next to impossible here – it feels like the drivers reject you more than they accept. One driver told us to take a bus! They only go where they feel like going. You have to be so strategic about where you catch one. People pretty much have to throw themselves in the road at the end of the night. Despite the taxis at night, transportation is good with the option of ferries, buses, trams, monorail, train, water taxis.
