Well, he deserves it. I still think he was a true genius. And apparently there are more people and authorities who think this. WQXR, for example, the classical radio station for New York and Newark, agrees with me. The whole month of November has been declared "Beethoven Awareness Month". This is a huge project. They broadcast a lot of Beethoven in their regular transmission. Besides that they also have a special web-station that solely plays works by Beethoven, 24 hours per day. A whole month long!
Apart from that they broadcast commercials on the local TV stations and, at some time, the whole city had been postered with very nicely designed "OBEY THOVEN" posters.
Today another milestone of the project was realized, the Beethoven endurance test, a 12-hour marathon in which various pianists played all the 32 piano sonatas by Beethoven. Major Michael Bloomberg appeared here as well and in a speech he officially declared this day as "Beethoven Day". See the speech here.
By the way, check out another, less formal, project of the Beethoven Awareness Month, the Beethoven Time Machine. Here you can submit and see all kind of funny historic photos in which Beethoven was so called present.
