For those who do not read Dutch: I have set a goal for myself to hike all the Manhattan avenues end-to-end, that intersect with 89th Street.

Chelsea

I have realized that I have been neglecting my Avenues Project in a terrible way. Since it was a rather sunny day today I thought it would be a nice one for another Avenue, Seventh Avenue. With its 8.2 miles / 13.2 km the second longest so far!

Seventh Ave was one of the avenues that were laid out in the earlier mentioned Commisioners' Plan. At that time the southern end was at 11th Street. As per 1914 the avenue was extended in southern direction to connect with Varick Street, at Clarkson Street, which is currently still the southern end. It improved the traffic flow, but also cost New York many historic buildings, that got demolished.

Between 34th and 39th Street, 7th is also called Fashion Avenue, as a tribute to its role in the garment and fashion industry.

Times Square
At 59th Street Central Park interrupts the straight line of the avenue. Cars cannot enter here during the weekends, the asphalt, however, continues in a playful curving way as West Drive. I had hiked a part of the West Drive quite recently surrounded by hundreds of hikers during the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. Today the road was almost exclusively for me, especially in the northern part of Central Park.

At 110th Street, after exiting Central Park, 7th picks up its name again, as well as its straight line. At least that is what the maps tell. The street name signs, however, only mention its Harlem name, Adam Clayton Powell Jr Boulevard. Named after Adam Clayton Powell Jr, the first African American in Congress. Seventh Avenue, finally ends at the Harlem River Drive where it continues on Macombs Dam Bridge which turns into Jerome Avenue in The Bronx.

Harlem

Seventh Ave follows more or less the same experience pattern as the other avenues. It starts in a cozy Chelsea, turns more busy around Midtown where big structures as Macy's, Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and Carnegie Hall appear. At 44th an 45th Street it crosses Broadway, at Times Square, which is always a complete madhouse. The Central Park/ West Drive leg is convenientely relaxed, at some places more a like a hike in the forest! The section through Harlem is a mixture of beautiful old buildings, nice little shops, and sad partly collapsed or burnt out structures.
