Yes they are called French fries in the USA. But REAL fries can only be obtained in Belgium! Belgian fries! Strange enough they still mean the same. The name was given by allied soldiers who tasted the fries in Belgium during WW I. They called them French fries because they were in a French speaking part of Belgium.
I tried several fries in New York City, see here and here but it is simply not it. But today I had the possibility to, once again, enjoy a delicious portion of genuine Belgian fries! I was on my way to France driving through the beautiful Belgian Ardennes. I happened to pass by around lunch time, so I left the highway near the Baraque de Fraiture area, Belgium's third highest point and ski area.
I found a fries serving restaurant called Baraque de Friture which sold me the gold brown potato sticks with a huge blob of mayonnaise. Since it was nice weather outside I decided to take them out. I drove to a little village nearby where I found a nice place in the forest with a view to enjoy the fries. Later I discovered the little village was called Petites Tailles (small waists). How ironic after eating so much cholesterol!
