The Coca Cola collection in the window

I thought I knew the special places in my neighborhood pretty well. Especially because of the many Avenue hikes I did. But today Willem and Lot surprised me with a very neat spot a few blocks away on Lexington Avenue: The Lexington Candy Shop Luncheonette. This place is a true gem!

Founded in 1925 this typical New York style Luncheonette has always been operated by the same owner. The appearance and interior have hardly been modified. That may sound not innovative, but it results in a piece of New York that, nowadays, is only visible in older movies.

The Luncheonette also owns a respectable Coca Cola collection. I the windows of the venue a huge collection of Coca Cola bottles from all over the world are on display. Very cool!

Like any good Candy Shop, they feature a soda fountain, great shakes, and another New York City classic, the Egg Cream Soda.

Inside the diner
This milk shake-like drink is NOT prepared with cream, nor does it contain eggs. It was invented in the late 19s in Brooklyn. The name is probably derived from the German-Yiddish word "Echt" (real) meaning a Real Cream -> Echt Cream -> Egg Cream. But other theories exist too. Whatever it may be, it is delicious!
