The Billy Goat Trail in the C&O Canal National Historic Park

As stated in my previous blog entry I am on my way to Washington DC, again. Now with my guest Sana who will have to be delivered here since she is flying out of DCA airport on Monday.
Just like during my visit a month ago (see here) I paid a visit to the C&O Canal Historic Park on my way to the hotel. Arriving here at the end of the day is a pleasant alternative for being stuck on the crowded highways around DC during rush hour. And I liked the site so much that I wanted to allow Sana to experience it too. Besides that I had a "selfish" purpose for the visit, hiking (at least a part of) the Billy Goat Trail which runs in this park.
The Billy Goat Trail is a rather strenuous trail that runs along the Potomac River and Mather Gorge on rather rocky terrain.
Since we arrived rather late at the C&O site and we did not want the risk to be locked in a National Park again (yes that happened to us, see here!) we only hiked about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) one way of Billy Goat. Still enough to have a good impression of the beautiful area.
It is amazing how one month can change the appearance of a park. During my last visit the trees were completely leafless and now they where loaded with fresh green leaves. The Park Service had also progressed with maintenance. A section of the C&O Canal that had been drained during my previous visit was now filled again.
