The Mazda parked just before the point where the road was closed

OK, I have to face it. Today I was beaten by a mountain. Here is why and how:

The last snow in the city had disappeared already weeks ago. There were many days with rain and also some days with really high temperatures. So, after my last week's Bear Mountain hike, I got (apparently) overconfident and decided to do a hike in the Catskill Mountains. I found a hike that was not too long but on a pretty high mountain, Blackhead Mountain. I may need to do more research before I start hiking, because while typing this weblog I just discovered that Blackhead Mountain is the fourth tallest mountain in the Catskill High Peaks.

After some hard climbing the views get better
The top measures 1201 meters (3940 ft) exact the same height as Thomas Cole Mountain which lies in a 2-kilometer radius.

While I approached the Catskills I already got the idea that this hike would become much more of a winter hike than I expected. In the distance the majestic mountains appeared to be white-ish instead of the usual green-ish. When I drove into the mountains and started climbing the steep route 23 the temperatures descended from about +5° C (41F) to -3 °C (27 F). The last half mile of the road that should have taken me and my car to the hike's parking lot was seasonally closed and covered in snow. Fortunately I could park the Mazda at that point so my hike was extended with half a mile.

The snow was not really deep, but that changed during the hike which went uphill in a fast and steep pace.

Ice impression
Due to the past warm days the snow had melted and frozen again. This made it rather stable to walk on, unless I hit a weaker point with to much force. In those cases my leg disappeared as far as my knees or further into the snow.

The trail was easy to follow, because several hikers had preceded me. At least until after about 350 meters of climbing, at a height of 1000 meters, my unknown fellow hikers had had stopped following the trail markers. I continued for several 100 meters but came at a very steep and icy ridge. I considered that irresponsible. Especially for a solo hiker. So, I backtracked the way I came. Then I discovered that my invisible hike colleagues had taken a shortcut. Again steep, and icy, by with many trees and branches to hold on. I gave it a shot and managed to hoist myself back to the official trail on the ledge.

My unfinished hike
It flattened out soon, but then started its final ascent to the summit of Blackhead. And again it became steep. Too steep for my taste. At only 100 meters below the summit I had to face it. I was beaten by Blackhead Mountain. I once more gave in and decided to try it again in summer. Better safe than sorry! A good choice, on my way down the temperature fell quickly. At the car the outside temperature measured -6°C (21 F) in the meantime. The goal may not haven been attained. The hike was beautiful an in that way still very rewarding.
