Enjoying my job! Detainee Operations in Iraq. It wasn't total enjoyment, but the comradary and the cohesiveness of our unit is something which I will never forget. There are days that go by now, that I really miss it over there, I do truly want to go back, but maybe next time to Afghanistan.
One of the few places to eat in Camp Bucca
If the trucks delivered, the entire selection of breads and meats and chesess and vegetables are available. If not, then you are lucky if you can even have bread on your Sandwich. What a great place to get food other than the chow hall every now and again, if you have money in your pocket.

Affordable, different fare
If you have time off from work, head on over to Pizza Hut at the square. As long as there are no incoming mortars, enjoy yourself under the pavillion away from the hot sun. The food is what you expect from a Pizza Hut, but is sure tastes good when you eat in the chow hall all the time. If you have a little extra money on hand every now and again, check it out!
Fun and Place to Cool off from the Heat!
Well, one place to sit to get away from the heat is Green Beans Coffee shop. Many selections to choose from. My favorite is the Chai. It may not be as good as what the local Iraqis get here at Camp Bucca, but it is quite good and will get you going for your next shift of work or enjoy it when you are not working!
What a nice evening hanging out
Affordable, comfortable place to sleep!
For the accomodations we had, Tent city was ok for a little while. You can listen to the generators during your sleep time and maybe they will lull you to sleep. Well for me, they did lull me to sleep. BUT.... If you were lucky or got promoted, you get to sleep in a trailer with one roomate and the ants. Tent City was big and roomy and could fit up to 80 in a tent. If the aircondition was working, you either were too close to it and got cold in the night or to far away and never could get cooled off. Some of the tents have bunk beds which can accomodate well over 100. Hopefully you don't fall off in the night. Well obviously if there are no water restrictions, you can walk to the showers and by the time you are done and clean, and make it back to the tent you are full of sand again. The port o pots were perfect if there was toilet paper. They do get cleaned out every day. But the amount of port o pots at Camp Bucca, you smell them all the time!
One of the smaller tents which d
Cover up as much as possible
Yes as beautiful as the sunrises are and the sunsets at Camp Bucca, It gets rather hot there. The sand blows sometimes and is relentless, so cover up your face and especially your ears. If you can ride the bus to get around then do so, so you can keep cool. You can ride the bus's all day and all night long. Make sure you have a camel back with at least a quart of water on you at all times. Carry toilet paper too, because not always is there toilet paper to be used. Make sure you have hand sanitizer always to, incase the water is not on.
Have fun on your visit!
Enduring the heat one hot day.
Arriving in Camp Bucca the heat was difficult to adjust to 150 degrees during the hottest part of the day and about 430 am it would be only a mere 90 degrees...... We had a little bit of time to acclimate... But after adjusting, the heat was intense until Oct when the fly season was terrible. The flys get in everything. The winter months are not to bad, one will need a hat and gloves and a medium weight jacket to keep warm. But then the flys come out again in March and die off in April. The sun rises early and sets late. The sun rises are absolutely beautiful... You can hear the music of prayers during prayer time off in the distance... At night it is pretty desolate, but you can see a few lights off in the distance. Aside from the water restrictions due to the dry climate. There is a bit of humidity and a moist breeze everynow and again. The sandstorms, wow.... need I say more. Cover up! And rainy season in Jan and Feb.... wow, when it rains, it rains... Over all I enjoyed my time there and would love to go back. The locals from Um Kasar were very nice and fun to work with. Our accomodations were decent, with air condition only , no heat. Walking distance to the trailers that had the toilets and farther walking distance to the trailers that had the showers. Good times at Camp Bucca "Resort"
