I arrived yesterday evening in Medellin. Pietro, a friend's brother, picked me up at the airport. Tonight he took me around a bit in the city. He wanted me to see the Metro. There are several lines in the metro and one line goes up the mountains on a metrocable. We took the cable all the way and stopped a couple of times to check out the area. The system is unbelievable. The metro was incredibly clean and smooth. It is apparent that the people of Medellin are very proud of their metro system. The city is well gaurded. There are patrol people for the metro, patrol people for public spaces, the police, etc. So far, I've had no problem. The people are very nice, but it is a big city and tons of people.
I will be attending the ecovillage convergence in January at Aldeafeliz. I'm very excited and it looks like I will be able to either stay there or at the Darien Foundation to volunteer. I'm enjoying the city, but really want to get to the heart of why I'm here.
I am overwhelmed about how developed and lush so many areas are. There are some very poor areas I saw from the metrocable, but I haven't wandered around a lot yet. I'm a little nervous about it, but I can't stay couped in the hostel forever. Only my second day here and I think I have to conquer it all in one day.
The hostel is also quite nice for hostels anyways. Great system of internet and beer! How much better can life get?
