My best holiday ever!!! Go see Cuba now it is still authentic!!!

Camaguey, Cuba

Camaguey

After Sancti Spiritus we moved on further east, first to Camaguey, another pearl of Cuba. It is a absolute beautiful town, the third town of Cuba after Havana and Santiago de Cuba with about 350,000 inhabitants. After almost continuous attacks from pirates in the past the original city was moved inland in 1528. The new city was built with a confusing lay-out of alleys that made it easier to defend it from any raiders. There are many blind alleys and forked streets that lead to squares of different sizes. Off course, this makes this city so unique that it is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The symbol of the city of Camagüey is the clay pot (tinajones), used to capture rain water to be used later, keeping it fresh. The outline of Ignacio Agramonte's horseback statue in the Park that bears his name is a symbol of Camagüey. It was set there in 1911. The Plaza of the Revolution features a bronze Agramonte standing followed by his troops. Other things to see are the Iglesia del Carmen, the Cathedral de Nuestra Senora and the plaza San Juan II.
