The next morning we took the King's Highway to Petra. Also a tip: don't go straight to Petra, visit little places when you go through Petra. Our first stop was a visit to Mount Nebo. It is about one hour's drive from Amman. Mount Nebo is the place were, according to the Bible, Mozes saw the promised land which he may not enter. It supposed to be the place he died. But it's grave is never found there. Still, it is very religious. In the 30's they found a monastery up the mountain. In this little monastery they found 6 graves and a great mosiac floor which you still can see in the monastery floor today. This mosiac is about 1.000 years old and what I found interesting is the wild animals showed in the mosaic which are now extinct in Jordan like lions and tigers. There is also a olive tree which is placed by the Pope in 2000 as a peace symbol.
But the greatest thing I found on Mount Nebo is the panorama of the Holy Land. The mountain is 800 metres high but the land under is about 400 metres under sea level. The view is spectaculair, and you can see the Dead Sea and Israel. It really is worth a visit. After visiting Mount Nebo we continued our trip to visit Madaba.
