Arrival in China.
May 26, 2007
Normally, we are independent travellers, but for this trip, we decided to go with a group, thinking that China may be a little too difficult for westerners with no experience in this vast and different country. More about this later.
After a twelve hour flight we were relieved to arrive at Beijing, where our tour guide whisked us through immigration and on to our hotel. The Beijing Friendship Hotel.
This is a rather odd hotel. It's a huge sprawling complex which was originally used to house Soviet engineers and tecnicians....and the feel of the place is very Russian! Building No1, Building No2, etc, etc. The swimming pool is olympic sized, and more like an intensive training area than a recreational leisure centre. There are huge indoor tennis courts, again, more like a training camp, than anything else.
However, the staff were polite and helpful, the rooms were clean and bright and the facilities were adequate.
