Patiently waiting in Piraeus

Piraeus Travel Blog › entry 1 of 3 › view trip summary

The four of us rode the subway to Piraeus to catch a ferry.. We were not alarmed when the ferries weren't running due to a strike. We would just catch it the next day....(we thought)...for several days we went to the docks. We finally gave up when we saw the ticket office windows were riddled ith bullet holes....hmmmmmm may be a while settling this one... We used our Piraeus time take pictures and exploring.. We have a nice time although we really wanted to be sipping ouzo on an island.

Patiently waiting in Piraeus

Church.... behind it is a great place to eat...

There is a ferry strike in Greece when we tried to go out to the islands… We arrived at Pireas (city next to Athens) expecting to get onto a ferry to go out to Mykonos but instead we had to get a motel. The guys at the ferry office directed us just up the street from the docks to a motel. We got keys and checked out the rooms…It was 40 Euros per night. Yikes. It was a very grim motel that smelled of urine and just about had puffs of dirt when you walked. We had to be close as David went to the docks at 6 am and again at 7am.

I decided to take the room with a water bed because it was in the front second story and it seemed like the “best” room I saw there. When I told the man my choice he said he had been saving the room for a regular customer.

Tara and Robert under an orange tree.... can you imagine???? oranges growing in the streets!
Then he said," Well, you are here and they are not so you can have it." (Later we realized this was the kind of motel that rented rooms by the hour judging from the noise in the halls that night…) So we lugged our luggage up and put it on the second bed… We pulled down the sheets and found it was filthy… there was dirt and hair in the bed. We slept without the blankets because the blankets stunk so bad and were gross. We laid on top of the bed using the bathroom towels under us. I used my travel blanket to cover with and David used a towel.
So, you ask….. Why the heck did you settle for this motel? It was right on the docks and really perfect for what we needed... David had to go out sooo early to check to see if the ferry strike was still in effect…so we really wanted to make it so he didn’t have too long of a hike. When Robert and Tara knocked on our door the next morning they had their luggage packed and with them… It was funny as we too, were ready and packed to go .… none of us took showers because it was too gross…. Yep.. We were ready to move on.

The same nice guy from the night before was at the front desk , he was very sweet and tried to talk us into spending another night. He even dropped the price….Oh boy.... We were very kind and thankful for his hospitality but we declined another night ….

Whaha, what a motel. It's terrible that this kind of hotel are open. Maybe we need to organize a protest together this kind of motels, with very much people.. :P
