ivrea is a cute little town north of torino in the piemonte region of italy. the weekend before fat tuesday, the whole place goes crazy during the orange battle. the town is divided into neighborhoods and each neighborhood has two groups of fighters. the first group gets to ride on their carriage while the other group fights on the ground. The carriages follow a route throughout the town, going through each neighborhood. the fighters on the ground wait for the carriages to come and that's when the orange throwing begins!

i went here with two friends not knowing what to expect. we thought that random people would just run by and throw an orange at you! but we got to meet some locals and they explained the whole thing to us. they were part of the chessmen team and they fought in piazza ottinetti. in my opinion, this piazza was probably the most fun out of all the battle grounds in town. they shared it with the scorpions so it was really big and there was even a dj blasting music and getting the crowd hyped up. there were tons of people, orange in one hand and a beer in the other. on the edge of the square there's a safe area with netting for spectators that don't want to get hit, but where's the fun in that?

now i'm not gonna lie and say it doesn't hurt when you get hit with an orange, but the beer definetly helps! but then again, i probably wouldn't have gotten hit if i wasn't so buzzed. hmmmmm, that's a toss up.
