Discovering Porto

We were pretty lucky with the weather, eh?

A 5 minute cab ride had us at Stansted on time. We checked in and did the “Ryanair” thing – standing in a long queue then RUSHING to get seats beside together. We managed to find seats together and little more than 2 hours later we touched down safely at Porto airport.  Four of us splitting a cab fare was cheaper than getting the coach, so before long we were checked into the Pensao Aviz Hotel, right in the middle of the Old Town region of Porto. While relatively cheap, it was clean and conveniently located for shopping, river-side dining and the port wine cellars.

The riverfront was our first destination.

Cheers. Welcome to Porto.
We went there intending to eat lunch but we were told that they couldn’t serve food until after 12:30pm. They were happy to serve us alcohol though – so beers and sangria were the order of the day. Four pints later we felt we needed something more substantial than snacky foods to eat, so we walked all of 50m to our way to a little place with an elevated view of the river. The food was fantastic – they served a prawn dish to die for!! After a big feed (and a few more drinks) we figured we needed a bit of a nap in order to have the energy to hit the nightclubs of Porto!!

It turns out the Porto’s nightclub district is in a semi-industrial estate – so we were a tad surprised when the cab dropped us of in an area that reminded us all of Osborne Park. We arrived before midnight and the area was deserted except for some roadside food vans – so we ordered a drink and stood about eating “cachorro’s”. From what we could tell they were the local’s spin on hotdogs – but included hair-thin potato chips. Weird but tasty. When the streets filled up we made our way to the clubs, only to be bounced by a “members only” policy at the first one we went to. We had better luck into the next club, only to learn a lesson about their expensive “drink now, pay later” card system. We eventually found a club we liked and partied the night away – getting home at a very respectable 5am in the morning.
