shopping and harbour
today we are in bremerhaven and do a little shoppingtour and will visit the harbour. the weather is ok, not to cold. since we are here we had only 5 minutes rain. bremerhaven is well known as the city where the people at the end of the 19th until the 1970s century left the "old world" for a new life in the "new world". there's a thememuseum for that time here in the city. it is the german emigration center. hopefully i can take some pictures and post them here on travbuddy.
the city itselves is like all bigger cities. but we just saw the innercircle of bremerhaven and the harbour. there will be a new project at the harbour, and so there's a lot of noise, because they're building new houses and streets.
edit:
being at the harbour we decided to visit the "zoo am meer". it's a small zoo and it has his focus on wateranimals. but they have some small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs and even the big ones like icebears. they try to give the animals the best natural feeling they can get.
there are 5 different parts:
bidding farewell: a harbour scene dating back in 1888
the gallery of the 7 million : why did they leave?
on board the ship: passenger decks from three eras of shipping illustrate how steerage passengers faded during the transatlantic crossing.
the arrival in new york: ellis island was the largest receiving station in the usa.
forum migration: research ancestors, trace your roots in the largest international genalogical databases and be informed of aspects of migration today
ocean cinema: listen to emigrants and the descendants tell their personal stories.
the tickets for adults are 9,50€,
reduced (senior citizens, students, trainees, non-employed, disabled) 8,20€
children (aged 4 to 14) 6,00€
families €24
in my opinion it is expensive. but if you are interested in emigration and want to know if your ancestors came from bremerhaven it's worth it.
