The Tuscany region

This has our name on it!

Lucca is a walled city and some.  Parking the car we walk up to the city walls and in.    Cobbled narrow streets, clean but too narrow for cars and people, but there are both.  At the top there is a huge eliptical centre surrounded by buildings that was once a Roman ampitheatre but has become a shopping area.  Chic shops from Armani to Lacoste line the streets leading off from the centre.  Many famous people seem to have started out from Lucca and they include Puccini and Paganini.  Pinnochio is connected to the Tuscany region too.  The walls are extreemly thick and there is a broad grassed top to them that one can walk around on.  The walled area has huge horse chestnut trees alongside it and they are in full bloom.

After coffee and a pasta lunch we collect the van and drive the 40 kms to Pisa.  Once again we get lost when we reach the city but this time we are on foot and find we are on the wrong side of the river. Relocate the parked van and cross the river and find the camp site that is within walking distance to the leaning tower etc.  At 26 euros it is the dearest park yet but the facilities are good with a camper's fridge and cooking facilities.  The two couples near us in campervans chat to us and we learn that they are from Gosport, Hampshire and are leaving on the 8am ferry to Sardinia.  They will leave in an hour or two and camp in their vans in the queue.

All the toruists have to do this

In the morning we walk to the Tower Of Pisa where stall holders mostly of North African origin are setting up their wares.  The Tower certainly leans at an impossible angle and Andrew who has been here in the late 70's decides it has got a lot worse.  The cathedral has very ornate copper doors with figures in relief standing out.  Inside the vaulted ceilings are covered in painted scenes with alcoves housing huge oil paintings by many famous painters.  I am delighted to find 4 Green Men at the foot of two marble columns to the right hand front of the cathedral near the altar.

After we finish looking at the buildings we collect the car and head to Firenze ( Florence).  It is only about 80 kms off.  We get to the city easily and religiously follw instructions to get to a specific camp site.  Miss the vital sign I suspect and search hard finding it eventually.
