Lamia, Greece was a surprise to us. We had a great time shopping, visiting the museum and experiencing the warm Greek hospitality. Lamia was a lot of fun!

Living it up in Lamia

Entrance to a courtyard in the castle

We arrived in town after dark. We didn’t have a motel because we were not organized enough to call ahead… a bit of a problem we discovered when we tried three different motels and found they were all full. It was during the Easter Carnival celebration… we drove into town and found the traffic was bumper to bumper and it was just moving and moving through the streets as there were no parking places available. The streets and plazas in town were packed despite the light rain that was falling. Excited children in costumes were dashing around along with their families… Everyone looked happy to be out …  It was wonderful to see all of the people celebrating and having fun with their families.  Tots, tweens and teens in costumes walked with their parents.

David found a semi-legal parking place in front of a bakery. Tara, Robert and I walked to the town square while David looked for a motel. When we met up 45 minutes later, David had found two rooms a great motel overlooking the town square. Amazing location! We were so impressed.

Tara and Robert went out clubbing (We are typical proud parents and took pictures before they left.) David and I decided we would go out later that evening. we went to several places and had drinks then found a cute little family owned Greek restaurant (go figure!) They gave us a menu but then told us they would like to have us order their special of the night. Fine with us. We got beers and had fun sitting and watching soccer and just hanging. One of the customers bought David a beer.

When we paid the bill we tipped the teen who was cooking… it was so busy outside we knew he must have wished to not be working at the family business… He was very cheery and sweet.

David had paid 20 euros for breakfast for each of us. We went down to the motel basement to eat. Breakfast consisted of instant coffee, packages of crackers and packages of sweet rolls. Yuck. This is the kind of breakfast I warn the kids about… When we got outside we discovered there were two bakeries within a half block that served coffee. We determined in the future we might be better to go find breakfast.

When we went outside we could see a castle looking ruins on a hill above the city. We got a Taxi and went up the windy road to the top. We went to the castle fortress and found it was a really nice site with not much excavation showing what it was but a really good museum.

We anticipated seeing a small display but found the museum was very organized and extensive. We spent several hours looking at the displays. It's amazing to me to go to a museum where there are complete pots and pieces of plates etc that date 3000 to 6000 bc. We have always thought it was very plain and not much decorated but they have wonderful incised patterns and even have painted surfaces that are very intricate. David commented that it really makes you think about how sophisticated they actually were... We thought it would be very rudimentary and basic. nope.

The museum also had several Roman statues. their style was very distinct from the Greeks. ... easier for us to spot now... (LOL ... statue snobs now… ) wandering the grounds I found an area with some amazing pots.

That were in the process of being pieced together. The picture I took is one of my favorites ..

We called a taxi and went back into the main town. We shopped for a while then decided to eat before we drove on. We found ourselves back at the same plaza the little family restaurant was located in (the one david and I was eaten at the night before.) We decided to eat there.  Coincidentally we sat at the same table. The owner told us we had dropped two things the night before. They returned a metro ticket and a 10 euro bill that they had found under the table when we left. We were shocked and very grateful to them. We left most of the money as a tip to the cook and waitress.
