Ugly Sister

Ugly Building

Well Sao Paulo, what is there to say about this city? Not much at all, it is a big city and I have not seen so many ugly buildings in my life.. thats all I can say..

I arrived there about 11pm, one hour later than scheduled because of the flight delayed and Mel was also caught in the same situation from Manuas. We decided to stay in Liberdade, the Japanese district in a hostel call Banri. The taxi ride from airport to hostel cost us a bomb about Rs85 (S$60) and along the way we saw homeless people sleeping on the streets everywhereIt felt much poorer than many of the other cities we have visited.

The next morning, we took the metro to Avenida Paulista, to the musuem MASP.

I was quite impressed by what they have got to offer, a fantastic collection of art by the likes of Degas, Monet, Constable and Picasso, and also the old photographs of Rio, Cocorvado in 1930.. Next we went to Metropolitan Cathedral is a curious structure, a blend of Byzantine and High German Gothic. Construction began in 1911, but wasn't completed until 1954. Its best feature may be the Praça da Sé out front, which is lined with stately imperial palms and occupied full-time during the daylight hours by street preachers and stand-up comedians.

From here, as we walked into an alley to get to our next destination when we both realised that we seem to be drawing a lot more attention than elsewhere. yipeeee.. super models at last!!?? Chins ups, chest and butt out...nay, kidding here, in fact we were a little intimidated as we can see the poverty around us.

.  we started walking much faster than intended and just try to blend in as much as we can!
Next we head to  Basilica de São Bento dates to 1910 and is worth a look if you're passing by, though to tell the truth, despite all the marble, wood, and stained glass that went into the construction, the net effect is far from beautiful. I was  very impressed by the German organ with 6,000 pipes. Would have love to visit on a sunday mass.

The next day we went to  Ibirapuera Park. It is beautiful!! There were lots of people strolling the pathways, cycling, roller-blading and running in the park, even though it was a weekday and during noon time. Me and mel enjoyed our walk around the park as there was an eyeful to see.
Hmmm, those muslces... the brazilian men's bodies are to die for.

. it was so funny when one very cute guy ran pass us and Mel went like hmmmmmm.. we got a nice big smile in return! I am sure we will be very motivated to run regularly if we have such eye-candy back home :)

After this, we hit the shopping Mall - Iguatemi Shopping! Very classy and not cheap either. But we have to do what we have to do....:)

Sao Paulo has the best and the worst Brazil.  There is wealth here, good jobs, industry, its the fashion, cultural and educational centre and more.  But it also is dangerous and has millions of people stuck in poverty.   As much as we have been enjoying Brazil, Sao Paulo is a place I probably would avoid in any future visits.
