Another day, another apple, another dollar. Welcome back to Stanthorpe. To kick things off, there's some good news and bad news. The good news is, I'm no longer working for Wayne. The bad news is my new employer isn't much better. Not fair, correction then: My new employer is much better than Wayne, as he doesn't shit on you, but my right as a backpacking applepicker haven't changed. They still don't exist.

First things first: working at Wayne's farm day after day quickly became routine. Out of bed at 05:30 (I'm still amazed with myself for pulling that off two weeks straight), arrive at the farm at 06:45, picking, smoko, picking, lunch, picking, smoko, picking/packing, home.

So You Think You Can Dance: India & Nepal, every saturday night on Ten
Most of the picking I did together with Patty, sometimes joined by Pistol Pete. The second Wayne left and Pete joined us, the party and the joking started. Wayne's a neverending source of joking material, always good for a couple of laughs. Other than cracking jokes, we would chase snakes (I swear it was a snake Pat!) or be amazed by finding four Red Delicious (apples) on a Granny Smith tree. No jokes. We ate them. Just to be sure and to determine if they were real Red Del's or just freak Granny's. And yes, they definitely tasted like Red Del's. After a moment of contemplation, we felt quite stupid. Was this the flora equivalent of coming across a talking pig, and instead of sharing the discovery with the world, putting it on the barbie for dinner? We might never know.
Ape, Liz, Bo, Ro, Merel, Inge, Tina (deep breath), Miraj: good times.

Last tuesday, me and Patty were done working and waiting for the hostel bus to pick us up, when we asked Wayne where we would pick the next day. He told us, and out of nowhere follows it up with "and oh, yeh, after tomorrow I don't need you guys anymore". The guy wouldn't even have told us if we hadn't asked! The [Insert (un)appropriate swearword here]!

[And another one]!!

[You can do better than that. Think of a real nasty one. Yes, that's it!]!!

Luckily enough, finding a job wasn't too hard. We simply told Jacko from the hostel that we needed a new job, and the next morning he stepped into our room and plucked us out of bed. "I found a job for you guys. Get dressed, we leave in ten minutes". "Yes, apples" he answered (and diminished) our hopeful looks.

Half an hour later we were back on the ladders. Instead of working on a small farm like Wayne's, we found ourselves on a massive two hundred acre apple farm, run by an Italian family. Apple mobsters? Who knows. The work is simple, no nonsense applepicking, nothing more, nothing less. Just eight hours a day instead of the nine and a half we were pulling off at Waynes, but just as heavy. Sadly, this job, too, was shortlived. Same situation as before, there was no more work for us. Stuff about not enough orders and whatnot, but I'm done with it. I'm done with Stanthorpe, done with apples. Time to cash in and leave this place. I need to get out!
