The Yarra flowing through Melbourne

Updates from the sports capital of Australia, Melbourne! Along the Yarra river lies an enormous sporting complex, housing some of the legends of Australian sports history: The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), the 1956 Olympic Pool and the Rod Laver and Vodafone Arena, home to the Australian Open. I love sports, and exploring these venues was really interesting. It was sports that got me in Australia in the first place, and while wandering along the sites, I started wondering why Melbourne wasn't part of our sportstrip. Melbourne is crowned as Australia's sports capital (yes, even by the Sydneysiders), and while it's quite a trip from Sydney, it's still kinda strange that we didn't include Melbourne.

Legendary
As we used a plane to get back to Sydney from Canberra anyway, distance harldy matters anymore and the additional costs wouldn't have been too high.

That aside, after checking out the sites, arena's, hall of fames and horribly expensive fan shops, I got back to my hostel, cooked meself a meal and prepared for the night. Nightlife in Australia hasn't really impressed me so far; I didn't really got the chance to check out Syds, Bowrals is non-existant and while Canberra has some nice clubs, it's nothing too special. That leaves room for Melbourne to score major points!

Melbourne gratefully took that challenge and was determined to show me a good time. I was looking for some beats when I cool kiwi bouncer advised me to go Fitzroy St, St. Kilda, and the Prince of Wales club in particular.

A nice cabbie dropped me off, but sadly Prince of Wales was having a lesbo party and apparently, I don't look like a lesbo, so I wasn't invited. Ah well, your loss really ;) Making my way down Fitzroy St, a propper* talked me into checking out her club, Area 61, which would have mad trance beats, exactly what I would be looking for. Amazingly, she was speaking the truth. DJ Funk mixed wicked songs to even cooler beats, good times. After 12 it got fuller but never really busy, which was a shame. At the end of the night, after some bonding with the DJ and his mate from Geelong, I walked away with some CD remixes in my pocket and Melbourne having scored decent points.

After I slow day, the following night is was time to check out that other event in Melbourne; the A-league game between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United.

GAMING DAY BABY!
The moment I stepped out on the streets you could  feel the vibe. Loads of guys and girls in jerseys, police on foot, on horses, riot vans, guard dogs, excitement. Yes baby, it's gaming day!

While there was heaps of police outside the stadium, I was shocked to see how easy it was to get into the stadium. I could use any gate, decide for myself where I wanted to sit, bags weren't checked, bottles and everything allowed. I worked as a steward at the Amsterdam ArenA, the homestadium of Ajax, and this system is unthinkable there. The ArenA's stewards would burst out in tears if they knew how easy it was down under.

Ah well, time to play some ball. Melbourne Victory won the A-League last year, but I wasn't too impressed with their game; Adelaide was dominant, scoring two goals in the first half, although one of them was offside.

Melbourne Cricket Ground
Melbourne Victory equalised through a penalty, and began it's final minutes offensive. It looked like they were going to lose, when Adelaide's defender Alagich decided to help Melbourne out; reacting to a freekick, he headed the ball away.. into his own goal. In the 92nd minute. Ouch. The crowd went wild, but it would stay 2-2, giving Melbourne more than it deserved.

Stay tuned for new updates! :)

*: I'm not sure what the english word for this is, but a propper is someone (usually a hot babe) working for a club luring customers inside with promises of free drinks or free entry etc.
