After spending new years eve in Canberra I hit the road again, back to Bowral. I was able to stay at Karen's place on a last minute notice, which was really cool. She picked me up at Bowral Station and together we went to a farewell party: a lot of Australian students are taking a year off between high school and university/other studies, and a lot of them are leaving for Europe around this time. Tears were shed, cheeks got kissed, emotions let go, and felt a LOT like my last weeks in Holland, just two months ago. It was kinda strange being there, not knowing all of them, but I had some good times meeting up with Ellie and Hillary, two other dutch friends.

And, finally someone explained cricket to me, which makes it a bit more comprehensible. No worries, it's still ridiculous, but at least now I know why the fans are shouting and cheering.

That night we had a very nice dinners with two families and me. Sitting with a big group around the table, enjoying the food and talking, it felt a lot like a delayed Christmas dinner. I spent my time in Bowral chilling out with Karen and her family, going to the movies, walks around the park, having a good time. A couple of days later I went on to Sydney, where I booked into Blue Parrot Backpackers for a hefty 50 bucks a night. As this was the only hostel available I had no choice, but truth be told, it's a really nice hostel. Fairly small (around 50 beds), the hostel in pretty personal.

I definetely like small hostels better than the massive ones. In the bigger ones make a bit shy, in the smaller ones I can let myself go more. I had a good time in the Blue Parrot, and recommend it to anyone. We had an international crew, with people from all around the world. Group dinners, clubbing, chilling through the day; I barely got out of the hostel, but had a great time.

One of the things that did get me out of the hostel, was my first Travbuddy team up! Some time ago I came in contact with Allan through Travbuddy. Allan lives in Sydney, and we arranged a team up for whenever I would be back in Syd. He was free for the weekend, and we decided to meet each other at Circular Quay. When I got there he walked up on me and introduced himself, and we went for a stroll around the Sydney Festival Area. The SF just kicked off with its very first acts, so we arrived at the very best time.

Small cuts, big bruises, sore skin and aching muscles: good fun!
Later we had some beers (real, dutch Heinekens) and went to see a movie. Good times. He even posed with my Ape! Allan is a class guy, relaxed and good fun to hang out with. After the movie we a couple of more beers and said goodbye to each other. I hope to see Allan again one time, cos he's a good sport.

After almost a week, it was time for a new challenge: I booked a surf tour with Mojo Surf. Small cuts, big bruises, sore skin and aching muscles: good fun! Four days and up to Byron Bay, it turned out to be not so good. Don't get me wrong, I had a good time and I'm happy with my surfing so far, but that wasn't worth the 500 bucks it cost me. I could have taken one basic lesson (a $50) and hired a surfboard for some days (a $80) and my surfing would be exactly the same. So, I'm not really happy about the Mojo Surf adventure. Instead, take some individual lessons and go for it yourself. There isn't much to learn, and surfing isn't hard to do (on the right beach at least): it's experience that makes you a better surfer. Dude.
