We finally arrived in San Francisco after a long delay at LAX.  Flights into SF are notoriously cancelled due to the weather and it was not our lucky day. By the time we arrived we had been awake for 26 hours. Hugh seemed to handle it better than us.
We caught a cab into the city and booked into our hotel, the Sir Francis Drake. What a fabulous location, right next to Saks  on Union Square. There was a nice view of Macys from our window.
The shopping in SF was fabulous and the city had a real sense of vibrancy. There were  a lot of restaurants and bars, but with a little one, we struggled to find family friendly ones. Two nights we ate out in the Chinatown area, other nights we ordered room service. We also caught a cable car out to the fishermans wharves another where there were plenty of families around.
We did the Alcatraz tour which was good. Luckily we had been warned about booking tickets online early, or else we would have missed out.
We got around by cable cars or else walked. Yes, I know walking in SF is crazy due the steep streets, but it was good exercise and good to see the many varied neighbourhoods.
Chinatown was great - a real living, breathing community with so much frenetic activity at the many markets.
