Afternoon Tea & Garden Wandering

San Marino Travel Blog › entry 17 of 32 › view all entries

LA is such a metropolis...there is so much I have not experienced yet...but just give me some time and I will! As for the food, from cheap eats and mom & pop joints to neighborhood eateries and fine dining...it all ends up in the same place...my tummy! So join me on my urban exploration and culinary journey through LALA-land.

Afternoon Tea & Garden Wandering

I haven't seen my bff, Paula, and her kids in a month so when I got out of work early, I decided to make the LONG drive from the westside into the San Gabriel Valley to visit them.  When I got there, Paula and her son Aria were ready to go but where was my goddaughter, Leila?  Leila was off at school but we were gonna bust her out early...I was a great choice for a godmother right?...hehehehe.

Even though we live in Southern California, we do get dreary cloudy days on occassion.  Unfortunately today was one of those days.  However, the grey skies didn't deter us from having an afternoon adventure at...The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens.

Tea, Finger Foods, and Roses
Tea at the Huntington Library's Rose Garden Tea Room is a luxurious way to spend an afternoon because the locale overlooks acres of roses. Tea service here is not your typical afternoon tea...it is a buffet of yummy finger foods in addition to exceptionally tasty teas and scrumptious fresh baked scones.

The buffet of finger foods includes decadent sandwiches like Tarragon chicken salad with walnuts on whole wheat, Proscuitto di Parma with Maytag Blue Cheese and Bartlett Pears, and Smoked Salmon & Chive with Cucumber.

Also on the menu are several types of crackers and breads with several spreads, including caviar, and a great cheese plate to accompany them. There are four types of salads as well.

For the sweet-toothed, the tea room serves fresh fruit, fruit tartlets, cookies, and mini desserts several with chocolate...yum-o!

All are welcome to the Rose Garden Tea Room whether you are dressed in a 3-piece suit or sneaker and shorts.

In January, the tea service cost $20 for adults. Unfortunately since then the cost has risen to $25.

Reservations are a must because of limited seating as well as limited hours of operation.

To enjoy a tea service at the Rose Garden Tea Room, you also have to pay admission onto the grounds...but viewing the gardens and art collections is a great way to walk off the calories.

yum, this place is so cute! if you can't get a reservation in the tea room, you can request a special lunch box at the casual cafe that has all the goodies in it!

Nature and Art...Collide!
Discreetly tucked away in a residential area in the San Gabriel Valley, the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens is a beautiful space to take a stroll, to marvel at nature, and to appreciate masters of art.

Spread across 120 acres, the Huntington has something for everybody. There are 14 themed gardens with total botanical collection of 14,000 different species. The most famous painting in the Huntington art collection is The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough. The Library collection is also impressive with a Gutenberg Bible.

I have been to the Huntington several times now and my favorite part is the Japanese Garden with a huge koi pond and moon bridge.

When I went in January, the Chinese Garden was still under construction but it is now complete and open to visitors.

The Huntington is closed on Tuesdays. On Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, the Huntington opens at 1030 AM and closes at 430PM.

Admissions are: Adults $15(weekday) and $20 (weekend & Monday holidays), Seniors $12 (weekday) and $15 (weekend), Students (age 12-18, or with full-time student I.D.) are $10 (weekday, weekend, & Monday holidays), Youth (age 5-11) $6 (weekday, weekend, & Monday holidays), and Children (under 5) are free.

I haven't been here in years, but I used to bike there all the time after soccer practice. Of course, back then it was FREE! And back then they were still painting the bridge a bright red.
