One week in Madrid. Thoughts so far...
September 22, 2007
My life as an au pair is even easier than I thought it would be. But here are a few of the random thoughts floating around in my head....
i dont know if i can take anymore cheek kiss kiss. i have anxiety every time i have to greet somebody haha.
one thing you can say about los madrilenos is that they are definitely friendly and dont seem to mind that i speak spanish like a mexican, not a castillian.
the way the Spanish make their cafe con leche is nothing short of a lil slice of heaven.
wow! they can drink.
i thought i was good at drinking all night and pulling an all nighter, but nooooo. los madrilenos have to go and turn it into a city wide holiday (la noche blanca), which was awesome.
i have yet to see a single overweight Spanish woman, let alone one with boobs. so you can imagine i stand out on that alone
and furthermore how do they manage to stay so svelte when they eat so much bread/fried food all the time?
one in every 3 Spanish women I see has blonde hair. hellafuckinrude! i dyed my hair back to brown for nothing.
is there something about being Spanish (or perhaps just Euro in general?) that makes you innately more fashionable than say, the rest of the world?
one word: manpurse
of course i brought too many clothes, yet i still feel like a schlub compared to all the euros here.
even though it's quite la moda here, you will never convince me to get a mullet.
i will never get sick of starring at Spanish architecture. or even of taking pictures of it.
i've managed to deal with living in a four (soon to be five!) story house by taking a cue from the parents, instead of running up and down the stairs all day i simply stand at the base of the stairs and scream at the top of my lungs "ana! ale! desayuno!" or whatever else i need. the kids seem to respond quite nicely to that.
speaking of the kids, they're super sweet and just like any other american kid, they love the disney channel. except they speak like 3 languages, have traveled all over the world, and dont seem to have that obesity problem most american kids do haha. i think they really like me and they couldn't make my job any easier. except i dont think i can take any more hannah montana dubbed in Spanish.
Spanish men are a bit lurky. but definitely starers. and what's the story with them all saying "guapa" all the time?
walk, walk, WALK everywhere. definitely didn't bring enough walking shoes
whoever told me (think i read it somewhere) that it doesn't rain here very often, lied to me.
god bless the metro/bus system for being so efficient and easy to navigate
hola chicos guapos.
cheers to them for loving 80's music. at least that's the only English songs I hear on the radio.
i'll never get the Spanish lisp right. gra-th-ias, es-th-a-th-ion. tough work if you're not used to it
tomatoes, mushrooms, ham... you still scare me. but i've managed to choke them down whilst here. bananas? chicken (or meat in general) on a bone? still no dice.
praise jebus i never have to drive while I am here. terrifying every time i get in a car
speaking of cars, it's funny to see nothing but beemers, audis, mercedes, and volvos around (well at least in my neighborhood)
i could never go home.
