Mycenea .... Proof of Greek Legends..

Mycenae Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Mycenea.... Described by Homer as broad streeted and golden. Mycenae was the home of Agamemnon, the king who sacked the city of Troy. Seeing the site was powerful. The size of the stones was a tribute to the amazing ancient people who built the walls and gates.

Mycenea .... Proof of Greek Legends..

The Lion Gate

We decided to drive to Mycenea. We got lost on the way. It is so weird to be lost and  not  even be able to read the signs to find yourself.  We drove and drove then we came to a spot in the road where the water was over the road about 2 feet deep... that was it ....We turned around and headed back the way we came...  We finally realized we started out the wrong exit from town & retraced our steps to the middle of  town to start out again. ...  That worked.... once we were going the right way there were signs in English pointing the way... (that was a relief...)

Mycenea was really wonderful. the lion gates were immense  . . . . Each piece weighed tons each. even the stones of the walls were huge. the ancient people thought the place must have been built by cyclops or giants because of the huge size of the stones in the walls.

Mycenea

Funny and true story..... an amateur archeologist, Heinrich Sheilman, wanted to find the Mycenean treasures described by Homer.  He researched using the Homeric writings. He was poopoohed by the "real" guys... He actually found a huge treasure UNTOUCHED by looters.   Several burial mounds and graves were found with incredible amounts of gold and  statuary and pottery. some of it was pre 2500 BC!  He found a thin gold death mask that he identified as the mask of Agamemnon,  (now displayed at the  National Archealogical museum in Athens)  The find of the treasures was significant in the archeologial world.

Mycenea is  famous for the mask of Agamemnon... pure gold..... but it was later discovered that the mask was the wrong era for Aggie.  Poor Heinrich was criticized for his excavation techniques but... he still beat them all and found the wonderful treasures....

He uncovered "beehive" treasuries ... it's self supporting and has a keyhole opening... .. It was shaped eggshaped (like a beehive.)when you walked inside it echoed and it was 50 feet high by 40 wide.... (my aproximate measures)

the actual city was huge.    We walked the site and marveled at the size of the walls and surrounds.

the museum was so great.....  We were not there as long as we would have liked to be:  because of getting seriously lost on our way there.

Excellent question: yes: you need an international driver's licence. to get the apppliation go onto the AAA site (it's the insurance company): copy the application and take it to their office with a passport picture and they complete and return it to you within minutes. We saw an article from the american consulate and in 2006 they were serious about it and there were bd consequences if you drove with out it... not that the dealerships asked.... Sylvia
