The most challenging part of moving to Hawaii from New York was finding a place to live. The Big Island was so spread out if would neccesitate having a car. Kuau'i gave my the creeps, and there wasn't nearly enough semblance of metropolitan society there (What can I say, we were coming from NYC, we needed some sort of civilization to keep us in touch). We knew Maui would be the spot as soon as we spent a little time there - the right amount of urban places, beautiful beaches, good vibes, remote locations, and no need to get a car. We got a hotel in Lahaina, were the beaches were beautiful, there was plenty of places to work, and a great community of young people to make friends with. After 2 days search, we stumbled upon a garage sale. The home owner inquired what we were doing in Lahaina. We told him we were looking for a place and he told us he was looking for tenants in his studio apartment connected to the house (Ohana). We lucked out because not only did we find a charming little private apartment only feet from the beach, but we got to pay weekly with no security deposit.
