City Palace, Udaipur

Today was an organised tour of the city palace. We strolled down the narrow streets avoiding being horned by cows and run over by mopeds.  We met our guide at the entrance to the palace grounds and proceeded to follow him through the narrow passage ways and through the maze of rooms.  It was extremely busy and there seemed to be a lot of school groups.  Way too busy for me, you couldn’t get near the artefacts and paintings and by this stage I was palaced out anyway and just wanted to escape the crowds.  I zoned out from the tour guide and wandered off into the rooms ahead to get snapshots of the palace interior and views through the little windows before the crowds descended.

After a couple of hours of exploring the vast complex, we said goodbye to our guide and wandered back out into the city streets.  Our Geckos guide Mickey suggested we visit the Jagdish temple, which was only a 5 minute walk away. We strolled up the narrow street and were narrowly missed by a passing elephant!  This temple I liked, we climbed up the steps and into the complex, passing a holy man, probably not a real one as he was begging for money.  At the top we had to remove our shoes then later pay a couple of rupees to get them back!  The complex was small and very lovely. On the outside of the temple was a shrine housing a small bronze Garuda. Inside the temple was the image of Jagannath shrouded in flowers.

The outer walls of the temple were really interesting, heavily carved figures of Vishnu and scenes from the life of Krishna.  After paying to get my shoes back, we descended back down the stairs where we were free for the afternoon.  Some of us were hungry so Mickey took us to a very nice restaurant for lunch (which I can’t remember the name of).

After lunch I decided to do more shopping. Silk Rajasthani miniature paintings were my objective so I dedicated the afternoon to finding the right paintings. I knew it would take a while because when it comes to art I can never make my mind up. I went into 2 shops, the first one I bought a painting for friends of mine that only took half an hour.

The second shop I spent over an hour studying different paintings until finally I found one I liked. A fine piece of art work , set in Udaipur with images of the king, his men and the queen with a mixture of elephants, camels and horses  which is now hanging on my wall in a frame which cost 5 times as much as the painting itself! I had some time left so I ended up in a bookshop and a craft shop selling woodcrafts for which I bought two carved Ganeeshas for friends. Udaipur really is a shopper’s paradise for arts, crafts and silver. In the evening it was one of our groups birthday, Brendan was turning 25.  Mickey had arranged for the birthday party to be held at the hotel, we had a long table set up by the pool, musicians and a banquet. Party hats and whistles were supplied along with alcohol and lovely food. It was a great night which got a little out of hand after some time as we thought it fun to have a wet napkin fight! Oh well, you’re only young once!
