Flying over the Nam Song River (with new friends)
Vang Vieng, Laos is by far the most beautiful place I have been so far on my journey! Just look at these photos. Its actually quite ridiculous. The mixture of mountains, water, sky and plush vegetation is candy and sweet chocolate fudge to your eyes. You just can't believe it. Check out at the photos!!!
Besides the mezmerizing natural beauty, I had an "interesting" experience in Vang Vieng.... I got sucked into the tourist experience which I have to admit was totally AWESOME.
In Vang Vieng, the "thing-to-do" is rent an inner-tube and float 6 miles down the Nam Song River - enjoying the natural beauty and sun. But, as you sit on your inner tube with dozens of other young backpackers, you can't believe your eyes: all along the river's edge, there are bars built into the rocks.
Bars with thumping DJ music, sundecks, volleyball courts and the most amazing trapeze-like zip-lines that fling you 50 feet over the river. Some of them are so intense that you truly fly 6-7 stories high before flopping through the air into the water. It is a sight to see and an unforgettable adrenaline rush to experience.
Everyone partied like it was their last spring break! Loads of drunk people made it ashore as the night fell in the small mountain-town of Vang Vieng. Every restaurant on the main street had couches and beds with popular TV shows blasting through the house-speakers. As people ate and drank, they lounged around for hours watching "Friends," "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," and "South Park". Somehow everyone ended up at the Smile Bar until the wee hours of the morning.
Vang Vieng felt like some kind of Cancun-like spring break. I let myself go with it and for a moment, I think I forgot where I was.
