African beaches and Turquoise Tanzania
After two months in Africa that included the intense and strenuous summiting of Mt. Kilimanjaro, there is no better way to finish and leave the continent than to chill out on the spicy island of Zanzibar.
There is no place on earth where the water is so blue that it becomes light green - and so light green that it appears white. The beach water appears white. AND, there might be no other place on earth where the tide turns so drastically. At low tide, people walked down the restaurant steps onto the sand and out past the boats that sat dry 300 meters (or 700 ft.) off shore. But at hight tide, people were diving off those same restaurant roofs - straight into the ocean.
The tide dropped around 6 meters (19 ft.). It was astonishing to see.Rubina and I didn't do much here. We really just sat and drank water, coffee and banana shakes all day - reading, writing postcards and waiting for the mezmerizing sunsets...... until.......
.....Kevin came! Yes - one of my closest friends on the planet (and Rubina's boyfriend) surprised us. He had business in Paris and decided to pull a typical "Kevin Malone-maneuver" and fly down to Tanzania to live life with some of his favorite people. So together we roamed around Zanzibar, caught up on life and created even more memories..... and believe me - Kevin and I have a ton already. It was great to have a friend from home meet me on this trip and forever be 'part of it'. Thanks Kevbro.
Now, I am off - back to Thailand, through Dar Es Salaam, Addis Ababa and Bangkok - back to the islands. This is the beginning of the end....
