TO ILOCANDIA
June 7, 2008
I'm currently in Laoag City up north in the Philippine archipelago. I arrived last night at around 7:40pm via Cebu Pacificair flight from Manila. This is my home region on my mother's side. Although almost 100% of my ancestors and relatives from Ilocos migrated to the U.S. and elsewhere, and there's no relative that I know of residing in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, I still consider this place my home and my heritage.
The last time I was here was in 1995. Things didn't change much and I'm glad about it. Laidback lifestyle, clean and wide streets, fresh air, fresh food, intact values from locals, and the non-existence of too much commercialism like retail malls sprouting all over the country left and right. The proofs of Spanish and American colonialism still loudly exists through the the old architecture of houses, churches, municipios, capitolios, and plazas that are all preserved for the sake of history and culture. But there's much more reasons to visit this region aside from historical heritage and art pieces.....
