Cordillera Road Trip

through the Cordillera mountains

Some photos I took on a road trip with my brother on the first week of January 2009, as we traveled at the mountainous region (Cordillera mountain range)in northern Philippines(Luzon). We came from Nueva Vizcaya and drove through Kayapa, passing through Ambuklao Dam, going up further to Baguio City, then down to Tarlac Province in central Luzon where I dropped my brother off then resumed my trip to Manila. The climate is quite cold in that area(from 10-20 degrees celsius),the coldest part in the country during the months of December, january, and Feb. the region is where you find the famed Banaue Rice Terraces, Baguio City(summer capital of the Phils.), the gold mines of Philex and Benguet Corp., and the biggest facility of Texas Instruments.....

I didn't see a new road being constructed. It was quite disturbing to see all the trees gone... the effect of open pit and uderground mining. No rehabilitation of mined out areas. The Cordillera is a rich and beautiful land plundered by the ruling elite and foreign capitalists. Billions of dollars in profit are raked in from the gold, copper, and timber from this land, yet Benguet is one of the poorest provinces of the country.
