On Friday we arrived in New York, New York!
We loved this city, with its miles of high-rises, neighbourhoods with character, gorgeous parks and where nightlife stretches out into morning. Jill has been wanting to come here for a decade, so it's great to be here walking the streets at last.
We are staying right in the hub of the action, a block from Times Square with its theatres, neon signs, restaurants and curbside traders trying to sell you illegally-acquired handbags. We saw "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway, "Stomp" off-Broadway and have dined at the famous Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe. Brent fed a squirrel at Battery Park and we caught a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty across the water.
We've seen the view from the Empire State Building, which isn't quite as romantic as the movies - you wait in line to buy tickets, go through a security screening taking off your belt, wait in other lines for the elevators and finally stumble out into the observatory deck, only to be met by a throng of hundreds of other tourist clambering against the siderails clicking away on their cameras and phones. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks must have been there at a quiet moment. But at least we can tick it off our list of big-buildings-to-climb-and-take-photos-on.
We are leaving New York today and heading to Niagara Falls, leaving the man-made wonder of New York behind for the natural wonder of the falls.
