Driving into the cloud at about 6,000 feet.

It's about a six hour drive from our home in Visalia to Reno.  Just about 325 miles. The plan is to take our two dogs with us, which means a couple of extra stops along the way for them to sniff around and stretch their legs. We leave them with our son in Reno and they get to play with his two dogs, and they get along amazingly well.

The plan was to leave around 8 or 9 a.m. and arrive there mid-afternoon but we didn't get on the road until 10:30am.  And our mid-afternoon arrival was pushed back to about 6p.m. The kids (our dogs) required more stops than we had planned, but they let us know and gave us time to find a grassy area. (They refuse to go if there is no grass.)

It rained as we got up on the mountains.

A rest stop near Donner summit. The snow is dirty near the road.
Actually we made it up into the cloud. Rain and fog!  Near the top of the mountain, at an area named Truckee, there is still snow. Not on the road, fortunately, but as you can see by the pictures, the snow sheds on the railroad tracks were still covered.

Mileage is getting more important with the gas prices going up, so we try to slow down and follow trucks on the road at 60mph. That increases our mileage to about 50 mpg. Yes, I drive a Hybrid.  A 2005 Toyota Prius.  I actually registered 55 when we filled up in Reno, but the pump shut off a tad early. The next tank showed less than normal so actual miles per gallon was right at 51.

Our first and second nights were at the Reno Hilton. We have stayed there previously and they treat us coupons, lower rates and once in awhile a comp. room. This time we paid $39 for our room and the second night we were upgraded to a very nice suite at the same price.

Dinner was at The Lodge Buffet at the Hilton Hotel. The name has changed a few times over the years but the food remains very good, both in choice and taste. And we were given half off our bill because we gamble in the casino a little.
