Breathtaking Falls
September 22, 2007
So as I was saying earlier, we headed to Gulfoss. I guess it didn't take that long really, but since we stopped at the stables and Pingvellir it just took longer. At this location we were only given 45 minutes to wander around and grab food if we wanted. Since we were still starving, M and I decided to get a quick bite before heading to the falls. Uh, duh, we're not used to being on such a tight time schedule so we spent more time getting our food than enjoying the falls. But honestly it was ok. I had to repeat myself but we were so not prepared for the freezing cold weather. M even bought us those Icelandic style beanies... sadly it cost him $100 for the 2! :-(
So in we went to the cafe. Since we were so hungry everything looked and smelled yummy. I got a veggie sandwich, a cup of white asparagus soup, a blueberry cheesecake and a cappucino. M got the lamb soup the bus driver was boasting about, a huge piece of chocolate cake and a cappucino as well... ok, I've read over and over how expensive Iceland is... but I was floored when we got our total for this. Ready? The guy tells M 5,400 kronur or ISK. I laughed and ignorantly said, "that sounds like so much." The guy looks at me like I'm stupid, which I so felt it after M tells me, "Angel, that's like $80." Ok, I just looked it up, it's actually $87.48! OH My Iceland!!! I thought hell, this better be some really good food!!! If you aren't floored by that amount then I'm inviting you to my next birthday party and I'm so going to expect a lavish gift! :-)
Anyways, after loving on that $87 meal, which was good, except for the wet breaded sandwich, we grabbed our $50 beanies and headed down to the falls with only 15 minutes to spare. When we made it down, the wind was blowing profusely. My eyes stung and my lips went numb. M wanted to run all the way down to take pics closer, but I stayed behind in case the bus wanted to leave without us. I took my hands out of my pocket for less than 5 minutes to take a picture of Michael at the edge of the falls. I couldn't feel them after that and it stung so bad. No! I didn't have gloves. Unprepared remember. When M ran back up I was almost in tears... but I think the tears froze as they fell. I have never felt my hands hurt that bad before. So back in the bus we went as Michael tried to bring feeling back to my hands.
