ARRIVING IN LVIV ON THE OVERNIGHT TRAIN FROM KYIV
I have difficulty sleeping on any moving conveyance so I was up as dawn was breaking on the outskirts of Lviv. the mist-shrouded scenery recalled Bram stoker's descriptions in his Dracula novel. As we approached the station we passed railway workers comng in for the day shift. Upon our arrival at Lviv railway station, we were picked up by a driver arranged by our tour arranger Liudmilla of CAM travel in Kiev. Unfortunately, our room at the George Hotel wasn't ready until the previous occupants checked out around 10:00am.
However that gave us the opportunity to walk around the main square and to watch the city wake up on a warm October morning.
At one end of the square is the Lvov Opera House decorated with statuary representing the arts and muses. The main floor of the Opera House was surrounded by plywood construction fences when we were there but the posters were an interesting indication of programs that were popular with the locals.
Our guide appeared after we had an opportunity to check-in, shower and change. He had scheduled a walking tour of historic Lviv that included information about art, architecture, religion and politics of the region.
