Mount Cook
February 24, 2008
After a night in a campsite, where we reluctantly parted with $13 each for the privilage, we were determined to do the rest of the trip on the cheap. So, with our super thrifty thinking caps on, we headed north towards Mount Cook; the tallest mountain in Australasia. After turning down a number of dodgy looking laybys; we gave up and rolled into a DOC campsite; which lacked enough amenities to keep a flea alive. Depite this, the views were spectacular, and it felt really really eerie camping at the foot of this massive snow-topped thing! It seemed to come with its own weather system as well - sunny sunny sunny....thunder storms, torrential rain, gail force winds, snow....sunny sunny sunny! After a sleepless night, I hopped into the drivers seat at a respectable 6 am, to drive us out, before the warden came in; and despite a very shakey start from astroboy, we made it onto the mountain road in time for sunrise.
