An unexpected 'extra' day in New Zealand!
January 28, 2008
A quick definition of hell: being sat next to a 'big lad' who's reading an Encyclopaedia of Small Firearms for the two hour bus ride from Hamilton to Auckland at the height of the New Zealand summer.
Or, to put it another way: breathing through your mouth for two hours whilst hoping the bloke sat next to you isn’t the talkative type!
***
It got worse when I arrived at Auckland Airport and realised that I’d missed my flight to Rarotonga - I’d made the stupid error of misreading my ticket and arrived only the twelve hours too late for my flight. Bugger! A quick chat with the Air New Zealand customer desk and NZ$50 later and I was booked onto a flight the following evening. Panic over and with a minimal dent to my bank account!
That night I stayed at the huge ACB in downtown Auckland where I took full advantage of their NZ$10 all-you-can-eat Pizza offer at the basement bar and stuffed myself silly on a variety of deliciously greasy pizza and a few beers - whilst unsuccessfully attempting to chat-up the barmaid - before crashing out on my bed... alone!
