Four to five months travelling in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands & the USA.

The Kouang Si Waterfalls

The Kouang Si waterfalls

The original plan was that we'd all - Hazel & Maria, Dom & Tom from Leeds and Gaby & Carolyn from Canada - meet up outside the museum at 11am to have breakfast and rent some bikes to cycle to the nearby Kouang Si waterfalls. I met up with Hazel & Maria about 30 minutes earlier and we booked our second three-day trek for $75.

During breakfast at JoMa's - the granola, yoghurt and fresh fruit is stunning - someone mentioned that the waterfalls were 35km away, most of it uphill. 'Plan B' quickly went into action and we jumped into the back of a taxi instead.

The journey took about an hour and when we arrived the driver said that he'd wait for two and an half hours before taking us back to Louang Prabang. A bargain at just over £1.

Walking up to the waterfalls we passed a baby bears rescue centre and a rescued tiger.

The tiger looked bored to death, prowling back and forth in it's cage by herself.

The waterfall itself was multi-levelled and absolutely stunning. We climbed to the top and had a swim in the plunge-pool before walking further down to a massive pool with a rope swing and a deep enough plunge-pool that you could off the waterfall into it.

That night we sll went to Lao Lao Gardens - a great atmosphere, delicious Padsapao, and buy-one-get-one-free cocktails - for dinner & drinks and to celebrate Gaby's 25th birthday.

Dom wandered off for ten minutes before rejoining us with a smile on his face, and about twenty minutes we found out why. The music stopped, the lights dimmed and a birthday cake appeared with everyone in the restaurant singing 'Happy Birthday'. A nice way to end an enjoyable day.

It's second only to SaPa in Vietnam for being my favourite/most beautiful place that I've visited so far!
