The King of Thailands 80th Birthday
December 5, 2007
Gaby & I watched 'The Devil Wears Prada' - an enjoyable film with a great performance by Meryl Streep as the 'Boss From Hell' - on the rooms TV whilst the receptionists were waiting for us to checkout. After we had moved into the twin room we again spent the day wandering the stalls and eating the cheap fresh fruit that was for sale on the street. In the evening we met-up with Maria who was back from her brief stay on Koh Samet, and had dinner whilst chatting the night away. Massage! Bed!

The three of us spent most of the King’s Birthday at the MBK Shopping Centre. We ate at the fifth floor food-court, where I had my first taste of Sushi - California Maki with Miso Soup - which was extremely good, especially with a good dollop of Wasabi in my soy sauce.
After lunch we ventured to the top floor to see a movie. The only English language film that was about to start was 'No Reservations.' (A confession: one of my 'Guilty Pleasures' is a good 'Chick-Flick'/'Rom-Com', but this Catherine Zeta Jones 'vehicle' was absolutely atrocious!)
By the time we had left the MBK Centre it was already dark outside and the Siam shopping district was lit-up. We haggled our fare with a taxi driver and set off back to Khao San. The traffic was horrendous and the journey took over one hour. The city itself was strangely beautiful. Lit-up by lights, the Thai people in the King’s yellow polo shirts and were holding candles and singing songs in the streets. The fireworks spoilt the moment though, they were far too loud and felt unsafe. (No photos unfortunately since my camera decided that it didn't want to work properly after SaPa.)
We ended the day in the usual way: a massage - Maria went to bed straight after hers - and then dinner with a few glasses of red wine.
