The Grand Palace, Bangkok
October 5, 2007
The following quote in one of the museums on the grounds of the Grand Palace caught my eye:
"Hat Decorations.
In the old days, Thais wore long hair, piled up on the head wrapped with a piece of cloth and decorated with flowers. Later, when hats were introduced, the Thais put flowers around the hat but since flowers easily wither, gold and silver were used instead. The hat decorations were sometimes enameled or inlaid with diamonds and various gems."
I suppose you know that you're royalty when you do away with flowers and replace them with precious metals and stones!
