Back to Bangkok!

The hotel had booked a taxi to the airport for 10am, so we ate breakfast - a cup of very poor coffee, a baguette and some oranges - and picked up our laundry. They wanted to charge is US$10 for it. However, some underwear and shorts do not weigh in at 6.4kg! (It’s a good job that Gaby was paying attention when we paid for our room at check-out!)

The taxi ride to the airport was 'noteworthy' for all the wrong reasons. The driver had, er, 'personal odour' issues and the windows were wound up because of the air-con. Forty-five minutes of breathing through your mouth is not fun!

At the airport the game of spending all of our remaining Dong began in earnest. Postcards, dark chocolate, dried fruit, two bottles of Extra Strong Dalat Red Wine later and I still had over 50,000 VND remaining in my wallet. Why is it that when you must spend money there is never anything to spend it on!?

For the second time in a matter of hours I had to employ the 'breathing through the mouth' technique after the woman sat next to me removed her shoes for the duration of the flight. It could have been a lot worse though - Gaby was sat next to missionary for the duration!

We took a taxi to Khao San Road and booked ourselves into the D&D Inn - a 'standard' triple room for the night until a 'deluxe' twin became available the next morning. However, when we entered the room it hadn’t been made - dirty towels lying on the floor, the beds unmade - so I phoned the reception to complain and they said that it would be cleaned in fifteen minutes. On the way out of the lobby Gaby also complained at the reception and we were told that the housekeeper had been informed and that the room would be ready when we returned.

After spending a few hours wandering around the stalls of Khao San and Rambhuttri - Gaby didn’t venture into Khao San when she arrived in Bangkok with Carolyn - and after a Thai massage we went back to the hotel to get ready for the night. Surprise Surprise, as Cilla used to say! The room still wasn’t made. A phone-call followed by a visit to the reception where we asked for our money back so that we could book ourselves in at another hotel and the housekeeper finally arrived to clean the room as we were getting changed. The receptionist gave us a token for a complimentary drink - pineapple juice, not wine like in SaPa - as we left to meet Gaby’s brothers friend, Aviom. A charming guy with many funny stories. I had a 'blokes dinner' which consisted of a Red Curry washed down with a Beerlao!
