Back to Bangkok
October 27, 2007
I decided against going tubing in Vang Vieng - instead of slowly floating down the river taking in the scenary, which is want I wanted, the river banks are full of bars selling buckets of whiskey and swing ropes. I just didn't fancy dodging drunken people first thing in the morning.
So Hazel and I booked a bus back to Bangkok from Vang Vieng. This meant that I was leaving Maria who I'd been travelling with for the past two weeks and who Hazel had been travelling, working and living together for around 7 months. I hope we'll meet again in Cambodia.
***
Three buses and 17 hours later we arrived back at Khao San Road - "Tuk-tuk! Where you go?" is not something you need at 5am in the morning. We finally got our rooms at the D&D Inn at just after 6am, so I had a shower and slept for a few hours.
Hazel and I would spend the next two days shopping and eating & drinking far, far too much:
***
After travelling through northern Thailand and Laos, including doing two three-day treks together, for the past two weeks with Hazel and Maria, I'd be lying if I said I'm not going to miss them. Two great girls who were definitely up for the Craic!
Tomorrow I head to Koh Samet for a few days of lying on a beach and sunning myself.

- The MBK Shopping Centre - a massive seven levels of stalls selling just about anything you can think of. Plus it has a great food court on the fifth floor that serves cuisines from all around the world. I had some Vietnamese spicy chicken and rice, waffles and ice-cream and a fruit shake for about 350 baht.
- Back to Khao San Road where we had a drink that quickly turned in four or five by 6pm!
- Dinner was a feast: we shared a whole fish, spring rolls, Pad Thai with shrimp, chicken with basil & chili plus a serving of sticky rice. All washed down with a few more beers and gin & tonics.
- Even more shopping followed by a drink and a Thai massage. That man bent my legs into shapes I didn't think existed, but I felt great afterwards. No manicure or pedicure for me, though!
- A few more drinks before Hazel headed off to the airport to fly back to Ireland. Her bag was bloody heavy and she definitely owes my a drink!
- I then a relatively early night since I had to get up early the next morning to catch a bus.
