Traveled by Amtrak from Ohio to Texas, New Orleans, Chicago and back to Ohio in February 2005. It was nice to see New Orleans before the hurricane left its devastation on the city.

Historical Galveston
Drove to Galveston today. After the fun filled day we had at Kemah Boardwalk, we decided to take it easy and just do some sight seeing. Lots of history here in Galveston. On September 8, 1900, the deadliest natural disaster in United States history hit Galveston Island. A storm with winds over 120 miles per hour and tidal surge devastated the island and killed over 6,000 people.

The first post office in Texas was in Galveston in 1836. The first private bank was here in 1854. Galveston has over 550 designated historical landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places and over 1500 historic homes. It is a very beautiful city to visit.

We finished up our tour of Galveston and headed back to Houston. Rachel dropped me off at the hotel and she headed back home to Corpus Christi. It was very nice of her to give me a personal tour of her home state. I did some cleaning up, went to dinner and then to bed early. Tomorrow I am back on the train to New Orleans.
