We arrived in Christchurch
very late and discovered to our misery that all the accomodation was fully booked and so we joined around 20 other backpackers for a night in the airport, we pitched down on the floor and endured one of the coldest nights i've ever had. The next morning we awoke around 7am and shuffled onto an air-port bus which took us to Base backpackers where we had managed to secure 2 nights. Although we were told we wouldnt be able to access our room until around 1pm and so we trudged the freezing cold, monsooning streets of Christchurch waiting for things to open. Despite the freezing weather and the constant rain we managed to sort out our NZ trip, rearanging flights and booking ourselves a campervan, with the only one left not available until the 23rd.
Despite being the tiredest people in the world we decided to carry on our explore of Christchurch into the night and sampled many a local beer and cider and even a metal club?! Luckily the next day was far better weatherwise and we did another walking tour around the city. We even managed to see local legend, the wizard who stands on a ladder and gives lecture on his views on the world, namely that Women, Businessmen and Schoolteachers are the cause of all evils !! We also saw him do battle with a witch, well a religious fanatic who shares the square and preaches about God but upon seeing the wizard started pointing and yelling that God himself had told her that the wizard was evil at which point the wizard started shouting "burn the witch!!", so all in all NZ is living up well to its Lord of the Rings image !!
