Ellies in Base Camp!!

Last night we had four visitors in base camp! Our group gathered near the campfire and quietly listened as they came closer. Then, Jo told us to get up on the tree platform and be still. We watched as four elephants slowly passed through. These "gentle giants" ate from the branches of the tree we were in and we watched quietly as the moonlight softly lit them. What a way to kick off patrol week!!

Today we observed a small herd for a bit then set out to find a specific herd. Recently, an elephant killed a Namibian. It seems the herd was provoked by government officials shooting at them (in an attempt to get them to move away from an industrial farm....so smart.), and the person killed had previously shot at the elephant who killed him. They governement tried to blame a different elephant (a male "bull") and wants to declare a bounty and kill him. (The one who killed is a cow--female)... It's complicated, but basically, we have government officials tagging along so we can show them that the herd is fine, safe, and that there is not a "crazy elephant" that needs to be put down... Should be a great week!
