Step 3: Enjoy parks, gardens and forests

Lodz Travel Blog › entry 4 of 7 › view trip summary

A lot of my friends think that Lodz is grey, dull and ugly. Well, OK it is a little bit of devastaded, but which town is not. I like my hometown very much and I know lots of interesting places.... Mostly partying places, but whatever. ;>. I would like to present you my fauvorite ones (also good for tourists).

Step 3: Enjoy parks, gardens and forests

Botanical Garden

I love Łódź for different reasons but the fact that it is one of "the greenest cities" is one of the most important things. My friends, living in other cities, can enjoy their lakes, rivers or mountains, but when I'm somewhere else, I quite miss my green spaces. I enjoy the fact that through my windows I have a view on a tiny park. And this amount of parks in Lodz. Plus you just need to go to the city border to be in woods. There are so many activities you can do there, and it's far more interesting than spending time in fitness club or something. In our parks you can play tennis, do some archery, ride a horse, not to mention walking, running, riding a bike and things like this.

I've read that in Lodz we have 33 free-access-parks and 11 of them are nature monuments. I don't know if it's a big number or not, and I really don't care. We have also this huge forest in the city area (which is the biggest in Europe city area's forest, I've also read that)- Lagiewniki.

I like parks especially in autumns and springs (summers and winters are not that interesting). I've made some photos this week. Autumn is coming. This time is so fantastic. Colourful leafs, and huge amount of them on the ground. I make photos mostly during this two seasons. But maybe I will find something from winter time.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you the parks of Lodz

Lagiewniki Forest
The park was founded in place of the suburban forest felled during the World War 1, situated to the west of the Warsaw-Kalisz railway from 1903.

The original park scheme was planned already in the early 20th century, It was finally realised in 1924-1929, while the existing older plans were corrected and supplemented by S. Rogowicz in the 1930s. The park was supposed to serve for the inhabitants' active rest and recreation and it was supplied with a number of additional attraction, like the zoo (founded in 1938), children's playgrounds - the Jordan gardens, lunapark, exhibition areas, the 'Polesie Konstantynowskie' nature reserve, sports objects, etc. The park is covered in natural and composed flora and - with its 237 ha in sizeit remains one of the largest projects of this sort in Europe between the wars. The composition of the whole used to be organised by means of the three main axes, lined with the Pennsylvania ash tree and Crimea linden, which meet radially at the crossing with al. Unii. There were two monuments that were supposed to stand at the al. Konstantynowska: to Liberty and to the Missing.

The palm house was founded in 1956 and after many renovations it's still working. It's collection includes 4,500 specimens of more than 1,100 plant species and varieties. Of the 65 plant families, Cactaceae, Crassulaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Araceae, Begoniaceae, Piperaceae, Marantaceae, Orchidaceae and the Phylum Pteridophyta are most numerously represented. Eighteen species of palm trees are among the oldest plants here. A number of them are more than 130 years old and rise to a height of nearly 18 m. The Palm House is surrounded by the "Źrodliska" historical park that can boast 300-year old oak trees.

Palm House is open from Tuesday till Sunday, except: holidays and the last week of March and July (plant nurture)
